To the Membership:
With the Local 591 Executive Board Elections now behind us, and the new term commencing today, I want to say on behalf of your new Executive Board that we appreciate your support in electing each of us. We have some immediate challenges ahead in our fight to get the best contract in the industry, and this fight requires all of us to be fighting in solidarity against American. This company has made it clear that they want to outsource our jobs! With Aircraft Maintenance jobs, we have all recently seen the poor quality of the work performed at the Oasis Mod vendors and it is a slap in the face to our profession that those planes were even allowed to fly.
The only way we are going to stop this company from outsourcing our high-quality work to those types of shoddy vendors is for us all to stand up to them as one collective voice, and that requires your support in being fully unified as a Local.
Now is the time for us to truly become one local which stands together.
For far too long we have heard of different stations or different regions doing different things. As your President, I believe that for us to have true solidarity to take American on, this requires all of us to act as one. We can be the most powerful and respected union on American’s property, if we stand as one.
We can and will achieve our collective goal of obtaining the best contract in the industry, when this company finally understands that they are dealing with all of us collectively!
So, what does stand as one mean? I believe that it simply means we get out of operating like we had under the old fragmented locals. I believe that it means that we finally recognize the strength we truly have when we all push in the same direction. When we operate and communicate the same message across all five regions based upon the best practices of some regions. It also means becoming consistent in our contract application and our grievance settlements across the country. It shows when we leverage the strength and size of our Local with legislative initiatives. Lastly, we make it known to this company that when they bully, harass, or pressure a Member of this Local, at any of our stations, they have bullied and harassed all of us, and we will not tolerate that!
In order for us to evolve as a Local, becoming stronger and more unified, we have recognized the need to further improve communications.
So, in addition to letters, updates, postings, videos and such, communications are changing, with the rollout of Local 591 podcasts starting tomorrow. For those who don’t know what a podcast is, these are short audio clips that can be downloaded on a computer or smart phone. These podcasts will provide another avenue to receive a consistent Local message, and to avoid what seems to sometimes be a diluted message in our current communications process. We are looking at a wide variety of podcasts subjects, from general updates, negotiations updates, safety, ASAP, regional updates, and other topics.
Finally, and with respect to our differing views at times, I ask that each of you support your profession and your Local. The quest to obtaining the best contract in the industry requires a Membership that is unified, and that we must stand as one now!
President TWU Local 591
